UDF ideals needed for South Africa

The launch venue of the United Democratic Front (UDF) in Rocklands, Mitchell's Plain has been declared a provincial heritage site.

In August of 1983, civil society, activists, religious bodies and community members packed the Rocklands Civic Centre beyond capacity whilst the country was under an apartheid rule.

The UDF became the leading organisation post the banishment of the banishment of the African National Congress and the South AFrican Communist Party amongst others to rally and garner support for the anti apartheid struggle.

Veronica Simmers, one of the organisers of the launch event 36 years ago reflected on the role the UDF played.

Speaking 36 years after the launch, Dr Allan Boesak, a firebrand leader from the 80's reflected on what the UDF stood for and emphasised that these ideals need to be brought back
