Protests in Cape Town township after residents go without electricity for 72 hours

Residents of the power township of Wesbank, outside Cape Town, protested by throwing stones and lighting fires in the streets. The residents are protesting being without an electricity power supply for more 72 hours.

The protesters were able to close certain sections of the R300 highway and several offramps. Riot police used stun grenades, teargas and rubber bullets to push the crowds back in attempt to open the highway. As night fell the highway was still closed and the police continues to monitor the situation.
