A stray dog in Thailand enjoyed an idyllic beach all to himself as the coronavirus restrictions are keeping tourists away.

The local pooch named Billy was seen happily paddling through the crystal clear waters on the island of Koh Phangan, home of the Full Moon Party.

Footage was taken by Pitchaya Chaivuth, staff at the Sarikantang Resort and Spa, while she was walking along the front beach on May 4.

Normally the area would be rammed with backpackers and holidaymakers but the stray looked serene while he had the beach to himself.

Hotel worker Pitchaya said: "Since the Covid-19 has prevented people from going out to the beach, the local animals are enjoying the nature. Billy is not a dog, now he is more like a native marine creature.''

Koh Phangan is Thailand’s fifth biggest island, which is located 70km away from the mainland. It is widely known for the Full Moon Party which attracts more than 10,000 to 30,000 holidaymakers each month.

However, the coronavirus pandemic has caused all international flights to be banned and travel restrictions mean that even domestic tourists must stay at home.
