Argentina marked the highest number of deaths per million inhabitants in one day
With almost 200 days of quarantine and 3,352 deaths officially registered in the last 24 hours from COVID-19, Argentina is today leading the countries with the most deaths per million inhabitants in one day.
The data comes from the figures released by the website specialized in real-time statistics Our World In Data -a database of the University of Oxford-, and exclusively takes into account the universe of nations with more than one million inhabitants.
Yesterday, more than 3,000 deaths were formalized that were registered in the province of Buenos Aires in recent weeks and that still did not appear in the official registry. The incorporation of these data was the one that momentarily propelled Argentina - which was already among the first places - to the top of the ranking.
Since September 21, the number of deaths has increased sharply. According to official data, there were 429 deaths that Monday, 470 on Tuesday, 72 hours later the number was 424. That tragic number never yielded. Although the moving average remains stable in the Federal Capital –it marked a decrease in recent days–, in Buenos Aires and the interior of the country there is a clear upward trend.
Since that day, the country has recorded continuous daily growth in both confirmed cases and deaths from COVID-19. These sad data led Argentina to become today the first country with the most deaths from COVID-19 worldwide with 74.14 new daily deaths per million inhabitants. The podium is completed by Guam (11.85 deaths) and Israel (10.61 deaths). To complete the top 5, Ecuador adds 4.42 and Chile 4.24 daily deaths per million inhabitants.
