Severe floods have left thousands of homes stranded in muddy water in Nakhon Ratchasima, northeast Thailand.

Residents in the Pak Chong district were evacuated after heavy rain over recent days swamped roads and surrounding homes.

Due to the continuous downpours, a dam in the area burst its banks sending torrents of water over surrounding fields.

Rescue teams have already been dispatched in Nakhon Ratchasima province while management officers are still collecting data regarding the number of losses and victims as a result of the disaster.

Thailand and other countries in Southeast Asia such as Cambodia and the Philippines and are at the height of their annual monsoon rainy season, which sees torrential downpours.

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) said the country would experience wet weather over the coming days.

They said a low-pressure cell east of the Philippines had intensified into a Category Two tropical depression which would move towards Thailand.

Forecasters believe the depression will strengthen into a Category Three tropical storm before making landfall in the central region of Vietnam.

Rains are expected in Thailand in the central, north, northeast and the eastern regions.
