“No lockdown for us” says the migratory birds that came to South India for nesting.

Vetankudi is a small village that has a bird Sanctuary. Its located in Sivagangai District of Tamilnadu. The bird sanctuary has been filled with 17 species of migratory birds. This sanctuary covers an area of 40 hectares and it also has a big tank. These birds usually come in September month and it will continue breeding and fly away with chicks during the March month.

Torrential rains lased out South Tamilnadu a little earlier this year eventually turned to be a good destination for the migratory birds. Entire world is in still due to the pandemic but these migratory birds seem to have no lockdown restrictions.

Cattle egret, Western grebe, Darter, Grey heron , Spoonbills, White Ibis, Asian Open Bill Stork, Night Herons etc are the bird species that are found this time. Till now 17 bird species has arrived for nesting here. Usually more than 200 birds species arrive here for breeding. Locals say that this place is a heaven for migratory birds as they feel safe foe roosting breeding and feeding. There is a considerable diversity in their nesting and feeding behaviour.

Diwali is a festival celebrated all over Tamilnadu by bursting crackers. But these villagers will not be bursting crackers during this festival as it disturbs the birds that are nesting here. Villagers choose to save the birds and to celebrate festival silently.
