A senior citizen chopped up two motorcycles and welded them together to make a solar-powered car.

Wichian Ruenthai, 70, spent a year tinkering with the engine of the hybrid motorbike coach and is now taking it for test rides in Ang Thong province, central Thailand.

The old man used two old motorbikes for the project and added new parts to the engine to make it a solar-powered vehicle.

He wanted to carry several passengers in the unique vehicle, so he added a carriage that can seat up to seven people.

The vehicle uses four solar panels to work which automatically recharges while driving under the sun in the tropical country, where temperatures stay above 30C throughout most days of the year.

Excluding the motorbike's market price, Wichian spent 80,000 Baht (around 2,000 GBP) for the modification.

The senior, who only reached the fourth grade in primary school before leaving, said he had always been interested in engineering since he was little.

Now that he is retired and has a lot of time to create new things, he thought of creating the hybrid car to help reduce air pollution.

He said: "I learned more about engines when I worked at the ship support station. I wanted to create a hybrid vehicle this time to help the environment."

The creative senior citizen was glad that his environment-friendly hybrid car is being appreciated by people and hopes to improve it more after the test drives.
