The 6.4-magnitude earthquake in the province of San Juan, Argentina, left significant damage, including a large crack on Route 40.

Route 40 is the longest route in the country and one of the most important, considering it connects Argentina from north to south.

It is a stretch of about 4 kilometers, where the earthquake caused cracks that are up to 30 centimeters wide and 3 meters deep.

Along a 4 km stretch of the road corridor, near the town of Carpintería, the seismic movement caused a series of cracks.

The 6.4 earthquake on the Richter scale early Monday in the province of San Juan, Argentina, left significant damage, but without a doubt the most important is that of Route 40.

The 40 is the longest route in the country and one of the most important, since it connects Argentina from north to south.

It is a stretch of about 4 kilometers, where the earthquake caused cracks that are up to 30 centimeters wide and 3 meters deep.

Along a 4 km stretch of the road corridor, near the town of Carpintería, the seismic movement caused a series of cracks. After traffic through the area was interrupted, in the last hours a detour scheme was established without cutting off the route.

Argentine Public Works Minister Gabriel Katopodis visited San Juan province on Wednesday to discuss with provincial governor Sergio Uñac what are the options to repair the deep crack that occurred at different points along the way.

Yesterday, the National Highway personnel continued working at the site, while traffic is diverted to Calle 18. One of the options he was considering was to directly lift the asphalt layer and make a totally new one.

The strong 6.4 magnitude earthquake that shook San Juan, and that was felt in several other provinces, had its epicenter in the town of Media Agua, located in the center-south of the territory of San Juan. Some people were injured, there were evacuees and several material damage, confirmed Governor Sergio Uñac himself.
