Eyes too big for its stomach? Boomslang (Tree Snake) tries to catch huge Bullfrog. Slo-mo version.

The Boomslang, Afrikaans for Tree Snake (Dispholidus typus) is widely distributed throughout sub-Saharan Africa. As their name suggests, Boomslangs hunt mostly in trees but they do descend to the ground to feed. Boomslangs have enormous, forward -pointing eyes so they have very good binocular vision. Male Boomslangs are often bright green, while, females tend to be light to olive brown. We encountered this female Boomslang on the dirt road on the Dzundzwini Loop in the far north of Kruger National Park on a mild, overcast humid day when winged termites were flying. She was pursuing and biting a large Edible Bullfrog (Pyxicephalus edulis) that had emerged in the mild conditions to hunt termites. Although the Bullfrog was far too large for her to swallow, the Boomslang chased it and bit it repeatedly as it tried to escape. Boomslangs are rear-fanged snakes, so she may not have been able to inject a lethal dose of venom into the frog. We hung back, not wanting to disrupt the scene, but the Boomslang suddenly noticed our vehicle and stopped chasing the Bullfrog, raised her head and looked at us intently. The Bullfrog disappeared while this happened. This video was shot through the windscreen, so it isn’t as sharp as I would have liked.
