Thousands of fish carcasses littered Lake Maninjau, West Sumatra, after strong winds battered the area.

Footage from February 3 shows groups of the dead fish washing up on the lake's shore.

Head of the Agam Fisheries Service, Ermanto, said that around 1 to 3 tons of tilapia fish were ready for mass harvesting.

Strong winds caused sulfur and fish food at the bottom of the lake to rise and as a result, the fish, ready for harvesting, were deprived of oxygen and died.

Farmers and fishermen lose an estimated 10 million to 30 million Indonesian Rupiah when this phenomenon occurs.

Thousands of fish in cages belonging to farmers in Lake Maninjau, Indonesia, died, following the extreme weather of strong winds that hit the area on Saturday and Sunday.

In footage filmed in Agam district, West Sumatra province, Wednesday (3/2), shows fish carcasses filling the edge of a lake causing a smell.

Strong winds around the lake make the sulfur and fish food residue at the bottom of the lake rise. As a result, the fish in the cage are deprived of oxygen and then pass out and die floating.

This annual natural phenomenon makes farmers lose tens to thirty millions of rupiah.
