Traditional Minangkabau Wedding in Indonesia Showcases Unique Serving Skill and Ritual Dining
A series of mobile phone videos captures different moments from a traditional Minangkabau wedding ceremony in Lawang, West Sumatra, Indonesia, highlighting local customs surrounding food service, ritual speech, and communal dining
One of the clips shows a man named Basri Malin demonstrating a traditional serving skill known as “tukang tatiang,” in which servers carry multiple plates of food on one arm. In the footage, Malin is seen collecting and transporting large plates of dishes at once, a technique commonly found at Padang-style restaurants and traditional Minangkabau celebrations. Malin said he developed the skill while previously working as a waiter at a Padang restaurant.
Another video in the series focuses on the bride and groom during the same wedding ceremony, providing context for the event where the traditional food service takes place. Guests are seen gathering as the couple participates in customary proceedings.
The final clip documents a Pasambahan ceremony, a formal verbal exchange conducted before the communal meal begins. In the footage, traditional clan leaders and guests are seated on the floor, each with eight dishes placed in front of them, including rice, beef rendang, gulai kakek — a local specialty from Lawang — chicken curry, crackers, fried chili, boiled and fried potatoes, and fried beef liver.
All videos were recorded on a mobile phone during the same traditional wedding ceremony in Nagari Lawang, Matur District, Agam Regency, West Sumatra, Indonesia, on Saturday, January 10, 2026.
