Residents of Bokaap, the historic neighbourhood where Cape Malay slaves were settled, gathered outside the Western Cape High Court to attend the application by Block Development to interdict them from protesting near the company's building sites.

Chris Nissen, from the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) , attended the court proceedings and pledged support for the community. The SAHRC believes if the interdict is granted, it would infringe on the constitutional rights of residents to protest.

Osman Shaboodien, from the Bokaap Civic and Ratepayers Association, said the residents would oppose the application.
