Terrified locals fled from buildings as a magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck the Philippines today (May 12).

Footage shows houseplants shaking inside an apartment in the Makati City area of the capital Manila.

The earthquake struck in the southern Luzon islands province of Occidental Mindoro but was felt in nearby regions including the sprawling metropolis Manila. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported the earthquake struck at a depth of 112 km (69.6 miles).

State seismologists said the earthquake was not expected to cause damage but could trigger aftershocks in the region.

Phivolcs officer-in-charge Renato Solidum said: ‘There’s no fear of tsunami and so far those who experienced the earthquake have reported Intensity 4. If that’s the case, we don’t expect damage.

‘Aftershock is possible but because the earthquake struck deep, it won’t be damaging.’
