Elephants involved in man-animal conflict captured in southern India
Elephants that were involved in man-animal conflicts were captured in southern India's Karnataka on June 10. The incident took place in Halekere village in Sakaleshapura taluk in the Hassan district.
Visuals feature the officials restraining the elephants by securing ropes around their legs and necks. They mount other elephants and use their force to hold back the retaliating jumbo. Following this, the officials use an excavator to lift the elephant and place it in the back of a pick-up truck. Later, as they take the elephant away, the other jumbos nuzzle it to sympathize. Meanwhile, the onlookers gather around to behold the experience.
The forest department captured two elephants, identified as Gunda and Mountain, for causing man-animal conflicts in the Sakleshpur and Alur regions. The officials tranquilized the jumbos, who claimed the lives of six people since January.
Over 120 staff members from the forest department, led by Deputy Conservator of Forests, Dr. Basavara, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Yedukondalu V, including elephants Abhimanyu, Arjuna, Mahendra, Bheema, and Ganesha, participated in the operation. Deputy Conservator of Forests, Dr. Basavara, spotted the elephant and Department sharpshooters, Venkatesh and Mujeeb, shot the tranquilizers. Moreover, the officials will be releasing Gunda at M.M. Hills and Mountain in Cauvery Nisargadhama after trying to radio-collar them.
