DFDS have launched a new freight ferry running between Sheerness and Calais using ship 'Maxine', which is believed to be the first ferry to Europe to operate from the Port of Sheerness on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent for 25 years, following the demise of the prestigious Olau Line ferries to Holland in 1994, and other attempts to run a freight service up to 1996.

Commercial sailings of the unaccompanied freight route which bypasses Dover began this week, although dock workers in Calais tried to blockade the service from starting with lorrys on Monday evening (July 12), which was only resolved after concessions were made after 6 hours of negotiations.

Footage shows the new ship 'Maxine' departing the Port of Sheerness this afternoon (July 14).
