Two monitor lizards were seen wrestling with each other in a pond while competing to win a nearby female.

Bizarre footage shows the two reptiles locked in a tight hug at a farm in Sing Buri province, Thailand.

Onlooker Jirayut Pinkit said: ‘They looked like they were friends who have not seen each other for a long time but my neighbours said they were fighting.’

The lizards were not hugging but they were actually duelling for a female reptile’s attention in a form or ritualised combat carried out before mating.
