Low voter turnout in South Africa’s 2021 local government elections

Michael Hendrickse, the IEC’s (Independent Electoral Commission) provincial electoral officer in the Western Cape, addressed a media briefing at the regional operational centre at Century City in Cape Town. The briefing was held at 8pm as polls were expected to close at 9pm.

Hendrickse stated the IEC estimated that voter turnout was at 27% at 5pm in the Western Cape. According to the IEC’s records there was a national voter turnout of 57% nationally in 2016.

The first results are expected to trickle in from about 10pm tonight.
