19th century Chinese mansion to become health center in Bangkok
A 19th-century Chinese mansion is to be converted into a health center in Bangkok, Thailand.
The building opened in 1850 along the banks of the city’s Chao Phrya River before it was taken over by a wealthy family. In 2016 it was renamed Lhong 1919 and opened as a shopping market with restaurants.
Beautiful Chinese graffiti adorned the entrance wall, while inside, stores, restaurants, and shrines were connected in a U-shape layout.
However, the attraction welcomed its last visitors on November 30 after the Asset World Corp Public Company Limited (AWC) signed a land lease agreement with the Wang Lee Company Limited for 64 years to build an integrated health and wellness center.
The planned business is expected to open in 2026.
Lhong 1919 was inspired by Chinese architecture which was popular during the reign of King Rama III. The building is made of brick and cement, the floor is made of wood, and the roof is made of tiles.
The historic port and warehouse Lhong was constructed in 1850 for overseas shipping from British Malaya, British Hong Kong and mainland China before being acquired by the Wang Lee family in 1919. It was renovated as a tourist attraction in 2016.
