Shots fired as Indian and other foreign students apparently threatened by guards on Ukraine-Romania border
Indian and other foreign students in Ukraine have been barred from crossing the border to leave and even threatened by border guards.
In footage shot late on Saturday 26 February an official in uniform fired into the air and threatened students and others trying to cross the Ukraine-Romania border.
According to the student who was able to film it, there was a big rush of Indian and other nationality students trying to enter Romania, to flee war-torn Ukraine. But the men in uniform had guns in their hands and threatened the students.
The guards in the video are believed to be Ukrainian. It has been reported that Ukrainian guards have barred Indian students from crossing in revenge for India's government abstaining in a UN vote about Russia's invasion of Ukraine. It is not clear if this was the reason for the incident shown in the video however.
There have also been reports that Black Africans leaving Ukraine have also been barred or delayed by border guards who have given priority to white Ukrainians.
