Burmese military breaks ceasefire and clashes with militant groups in Myanmar borderlands
The Burmese military has allegedly broken its truce with the militan Arakan Army (AA), with gunfire erupting at the Myanmar-Bangladesh border last Wednesday.
Footage shows the chaotic skirmish as the two groups battled in woodlands north of Maungdaw town in Myanmar's Rakhine state on August 31.
Following the coup that deposed well-liked democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi, the military forged a ceasefire with the Arakan Army, an armed ethnic group fighting for the autonomy of the Arakanese people.
An AA spokesperson said the clashes were triggered by the Burmese military entering the area.
Tensions have also spiked in neighbouring Bangladesh as fighting between the Myanmar army and Arakan Army fighters has intensified.
Bangladesh instructed its border forces to expand surveillance and security measures along the entire border, where residents were instructed to remain vigilant.
