Two students crashed into a roadside shrine after losing control of their motorbike.

CCTV footage shows the pair, who were riding without helmets, veering toward the outdoor altar near a shop in Chiang Rai, northern Thailand.

They crashed through a hedge of bushes, with their vehicle demolishing the green shrine on October 3.

Neither were seriously injured. They were seen sheepishly apologising to the property owner before helping repair the shrine.

Shop owner Ford said: 'I was shocked because the road is straight and I've never seen anyone lose control there before. The young driver came to apologise after knocking over the shrine. Luckily, neither of them was injured.'

Despite being one of the wealthiest countries in Asia, Thailand suffers from chronic underinvestment in its highways and education, contributing to its poor road safety levels. Only a handful of African countries are worse.

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
