Time-lapse footage shows flood emerging from manhole cover in Thai market
This time-lapse footage shows how a flood gradually emerged from a manhole cover in a market in Thailand.
The water overflowed and leaked out of the drain, eventually submerging the pavement in front of a noodle shop in Samut Prakan province on October 13.
Within 10 minutes, the sidewalk was covered in flood despite no rain falling at the time.
Shop owner Nan Tarika said: 'I have never seen anything like it before. The water came from nowhere. I was confused.'
Thailand's notoriously bad drainage system - collapsing through chronic underinvestment and corruption diverting away public funds - has been overwhelmed by heavy rain this year.
Meteorologists have blamed climate change for the sustained heavy rain, which has been hitting the Thai capital and provinces around the country causing severe floods for several weeks.
Thailand's Center for Climate Change and Disaster claimed the coming months could see heavier, longer rainfalls, due to 'climate change'.
Local media reported that the country has this year seen 'an unusually sustained and persistent rainy season'.
The heavy rain has been compounded by the deluge from Typhoon Noru, which dumped water in the northeast region of the country, causing rivers flowing into the central region to swell.
Thailand was ranked 110 out of 180 on Transparency International's 2021 Corruption Perception Index. Denmark, Finland and New Zealand were ranked joint first place while South Sudan was bottom.
