A driver remained incredibly calm after a lion pounced at him while it sniffed at his open car window.

Dirk Prins was pulled over in Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, South Africa, while travelling on his own when a young male lion took interest in his car.

Tense footage shows the precocious predator sniffing at the rear wheel before 60-year-old Dirk tried to shoo it away from his vehicle.

Instead of leaving, the lion stepped closer before lunging with its jaws open at the open hole leaving Dirk to laugh to himself before rolling the window up.

Property consultant Dirk said: “It really gave me a fright. The young male lion was curious about my car and walked around having a good sniff.

“I have been going to Kgalagadi every year since 2012 for a holiday but this is the first time this has ever happened.

“It got to within 1.5 metres of the car and just seemed to stand still and start staring at me.

“Once it had lunged at me I rolled the window up and it still stood looking at me for a few minutes.

“After a few minutes, it seemed to lose interest and just went and lay down under a tree off the side of the road."
