My wife and I took an afternoon drive through the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. It was not long before we came across a big black maned lion and a female, resting in the shade of a tree next to the road. At first they seemed calm and relaxed. Suddenly the female got up and the male immediately followed. There were loud snarls and growls while they ran to the back of the vehicle and stopped. We were confused at first with what was going on, but then realized that these two lions were busy mating. It looked like they wanted some privacy out of sight behind the vehicle. The mating session was very brief. To our surprise and confusion, the lions didn’t go back to their original spot in the shade. For a moment the lioness disappeared. The male came past the driver side and turned back to go and lie in the shade right next to the back left wheel of our vehicle. We felt a slight bump at the front of the vehicle. My wife looked out the passenger window slowly and noticed that the lioness comfortably nestled herself in underneath the nose of our vehicle to rest in the shade that the front part offered. It was 43 degrees Celsius at that time and the lions clearly felt they needed shade immediately after their mating session. We couldn’t start the vehicle or go anywhere. We sat tight and waited patiently. After about 15 minutes the female suddenly got up and moved back to their original shade.The male came running past the passenger side of the vehicle and joined the female again, both sounding exhausted.This definitely rates as one of our most intense and unusual lion sightings ever.
