A pair of feisty bird parents defended their nest from a buffalo more than 100 times their size by flying at its face.

Morne du Plessis was on safari in Kruger National Park, South Africa, when he spotted one of the ‘big five’ wandering towards a watering hole.

Amazing footage captured two black winged hammersmiths start flapping their wings and squawking at the massive intruder.

Despite their size disadvantage, one of the birds flew into the buffalo’s face to push it away from walking any closer to their nearby chick.

Morne said: “I really admired these little birds for having the courage to stand up to one of Africa's big five.

“They had a nest and a baby chick where the buffalo was standing.

“These birds are extremely protective of their nests and will go after any animal or person they perceive as a threat.

“This carried on for about five minutes before the buffalo left.”
