An abandoned newborn baby was rescued after being found alive inside a trash bag left on the roadside in the Philippines.

The foundling still had its umbilical cord attached and was covered in bits of placenta when it was discovered by shocked villagers in front of a closed store in Lopez town, Quezon province, on November 16 at 6:20 am local time.

Footage shows panicked residents calling for help as they unwrapped the whimpering little boy from the bundle of pink and black plastic bags.

Rose Fe Ausa, 32, the woman who first discovered the baby, said: 'I heard something crying on my way to the store. At first, I thought it was just a dog or a cat.

'When I looked around to find where the noise was coming from, I saw a moving garbage bag. I was surprised to find the newborn baby boy inside.'

The boy was taken to the town's Magsaysay Memorial District Hospital to be cleaned and monitored.

Police Senior Master Sergeant Alona Oronan, an officer from the Women's and Children's Desk of the Lopez Municipal Police Station, said: 'The baby is currently in a stable condition. We've temporarily named him Baby Pogi, which means Baby Handsome, because he is so cute.'

Social workers will take Baby Handsome to a shelter in Batangas province some 160 kilometres away once he is deemed healthy enough to be discharged.

Authorities are now sifting through CCTV footage around the area where Baby Pogi was dumped to determine who his possible parents are.
