A lucky leopard changed its spot at the perfect time by escaping an attack by a lioness at a watering hole.

Stephan du Preez was leading a tour through Madikwe Game Reserve, South Africa, when they came across a male leopard called Munye drinking from the mud.

Tense footage shows a lioness watching patiently behind the leopard’s back before stalking closer to its completely oblivious prey.

Suddenly at the last minute the leopard felt the lioness’ presence and sprinted away around the water, barely making it up a tree to escape being attacked.

Stephan said: “This was an incredible sighting. This is a very old leopard called Munye.

“He was drinking water when suddenly a lioness started stalking him. Fortunately, this leopard lives to see another day.

“The leopard managed to escape up into a tree. After a while the lioness moved away and the leopard jumped out and bolted away.”
