The northernmost border between Mae Sai and Tachileik reopened last week after being closed for almost three years due to Covid and security issues (fighting) in Myanmar (Burma).
Only Thai and Burmese citizens are currently allowed to cross because of ongoing unrest in Myanmar. Well-armed soldiers are stationed on both sides in case of skirmishes.
Minibuses are being utilised to carry food, household goods and medecines from the Thai side into Shan state. A Burmese ambulance is seen on an emergency call.
A few hundred metres upriver the scene is more relaxed as a Thai soldier sits with a dog and Burmese across the Sai River fish or play.
