Tourists arriving at airports will have to pay 300 baht (9 USD) tax when landing in Thailand starting from June 1 this year.

Grasping government chiefs approved the new entry tax last month. They claimed the revenue generated will be used for tourist emergencies and to develop local tourism.

Tourists arriving by boat will pay 150 baht (4.5 USD), while those with diplomatic and official passports and legal work permits are exempted.

Transit passengers and children below two years are also not required to pay.

The Thai government said the collected fees - estimated to ANNUAL reach around 3.9 billion baht (112 million USD) - will be used for accident insurance for foreigners. Officials claimed state coffers had footed a bill of 400 million baht (11.5million USD) for tourists' treatment at government hospitals between 2017 to 2019.

They claimed additional funds, which come as travel demand picks up in the tourism-dependent country, willrelieve the financial burden of responding to tourist emergencies.
