This is the dramatic moment torrents of mud swept away furniture in Lima, Peru on March 16.

The terrifying mudslide, known locally as a 'huaico', gushed down a road, triggered by cyclone Yaku in the Chaclacayo district some 30 kilometres east of the capital.

Cyclone Yaku has been battering swathes of northern Peru since Sunday, leaving at least eight people dead.

A state of emergency has been declared over 400 districts as the government distributes aid to affected locals.

The meteorological office warned that moderate to intense rains would persist until Friday, March 17.

Peru's National Institute of Civil Defense said at least 58 people have died since the start of the rainy season.
