Duchy of Cornwall cliff controversy ups a gear as a town council unanimously officially backs the protest. Whipsiderry beach, Newquay, Cornwall, UK
The Prince and Princess of Wales are drawn increasingly closer to a hugely unpopular development in a seaside town. At Whipsiderry beach a huge concreting and drilling exercise is temporarily suspended after the duchy of Cornwall responded to alerts from a newly formed protest group called Save Whipsiderry cliffs. The original planning permission granted by Cornwall Council a number of years ago stipulated that cliff stabilisation work would have to be carried out to allow the development to happen. Unfortunately exactly what form such stabilisation would take was not detailed at the time. The clifftop development of several houses would be made available for sale at a rumoured 1.5 million pounds each. Large scale public protests at the site have taken place and peacefull protesters have Been filmed being dragged across the public beach by security staff. The protest group Save Whipsiderry cliffs formed by locals Andrew Robby and Lyndsey Young alerted the Duchy who moved quickly to suspend access to the cliff workers. However when the April to October wildlife breeding protection expires the developers Living Quarter Properties Ltd intend to resume work. Newquay town Council have stepped in with full cross party and unanimous vote to support the protest and will write to the Marine Management Organisation who backed the plans and the Duchy of Cornwall who will be thanked for granting the temporary suspension and asked for their further support in the future. Town council speakers are Joanna Kenney and Joe Brook who proposed the motion and Dave Cheney who voices his opinion. The geology expert witness is Gus Horsley. Town Mayor Margaret North.
