A fire hit a village in the early hours of Tuesday morning destroying more than 170 houses and leaving hundreds homeless in the Philippines.

The inferno broke out in Barangay Carmen in Calbayog City, Samar province before dawn on April 18, and quickly spread due to strong winds, firefighters said. Due to the size of the flames, firetrucks from neighbouring villages had to be deployed.

Its cause is still unclear, but it is believed to have started in a rented house in the village. The tenants were away when the fire broke out.

City fire marshal Senior Inspector Victor Ygbuhay told local media: 'The houses were located almost close to each other and the pathways were narrow. We had a hard time putting the fire out.'

He added there were no reports of injuries or deaths.

Authorities said more than 170 houses were destroyed, with over 800 residents affected.

They are now staying at a relief centre in Calbayog City and have received aid from the local government.

The fire is said to have caused an estimated 3 million PHP (around 53,235 USD) in damages.

Calbayog City Mayor Raymund Uy said: 'We are calling on the community to help however they can. One way to lend a helping hand is to donate cash or any necessary items such as blankets, toys, clothing, food, and toiletries.'
