A greedy pet frog that swallowed dozens of rocks was saved by vets in Thailand.

The ravenous pet Budgett's frog named Jelly sparked fears for its health she became sluggish and lost her croak.

Worried owner Wara Nawara rushed Jelly to the vet after realising her eyes were bigger than her belly and she had gorged 21 pebbles that she had mistaken for food.

Experts at the Chulalongkorn University's Veterinary Medical Aquatic Animals Research Centre had to sedate the hapless female amphibian before plucking out the stones from her gut.

Jelly is now hopping with joy again at her family home in Bangkok after each of the stones was painstakingly removed during a two-hour-long procedure on April 20.

Delighted owner Wara said: 'This species of frog is omnivorous, but it usually eats food pellets. I tried to keep her in an aquarium with pebbles. She never ate any during the first few days, but she might have mistaken the rocks for food when they floated in the water.

'As soon as I held Jelly, I knew she had ingested some stones.

'Now, she can eat pellets again, but not as many as before. She has her energy back but she has lost her appetite. The doctor told me to observe her closely.'

Wara added that Jelly is now safe after the ordeal, but having learned her lesson, decided to keep the pet in a container without any stones from now on.
