This is the ethereal scene bioluminescent algae illuminated the sea off the Dutch island of Terschelling.

Footage captured by Anton Kappers on May 13 shows the glowing algae transforming the tide into waves of celestial beauty.

The filmed told Newsflare: "Sea sparkle is an organism that can glow blue in the surf of the sea. Usually, this is the case after warmer days. The past few days have apparently been warm enough to see the natural phenomenon.

"The water in both the North Sea and the Wadden Sea is completely blue. With the predicted heat, it will also be clearly visible in the coming days."

Bioluminescent algae's glow is a natural defence system that goes off when their environment is disturbed.
