Thames shipwreck SS Richard Montgomery's masts still standing off Kent, UK

The UK's most dangerous shipwreck SS Richard Montgomery lies at the mouth of the River Thames, 1.5 miles off Sheerness, Kent.

The UK Gov has missed its target to remove the ageing masts by Spring 2023 - with the work already having been delayed from 2022.

The shipwreck which sank in 1944 with 1400 tonnes of explosives onboard, could be at increased risk if one of its masts collapsed onto it.

Footage shows the shipwreck at high water today (June 15) taken from a sailing dinghy helmed by veteran sailor and wreck expert Tim Bell, who sailed out to take a closer-look at the condition of the masts and said: "it looks like the masts will be there for another year, such is the progress with the SS Richard Montgomery".

Footage also shows freight ferry Botnia Seaways which passes close to the wreck site twice a day, as it runs between the Port of Sheerness, UK and Calais, France.
