This is the stunning moment lightning appears to erupt out of the top of a volcano.

Jonathan Castillo, 26, was walking through his hometown of Antigua Guatemala, Guatemala, on July 10 when an electrical storm darkened the skies overhead.

Breathtaking footage - which has been viewed more than 2.5million times - looking directly at the 12,340ft tall Volcan de Agua captured the moment the sky suddenly burst into bright light.

Huge shards of lightning shot in every direction across the almost pitch black sky as if they had been fired from the top of the extinct volcano.

Jonathan said: “It was an absolutely magical moment. I was so glad that I stood there long enough to experience it and capture the strike at the right time.

“I stood there for several minutes to make sure I didn’t miss it and it was so worthwhile.

“In Antigua electrical storms are not common. The last one I remember was in July 2019.”
