Pee Zed, 40, from Leicester, UK, was racially verbally attacked by a stranger in Birmingham on July 10 after she intervened to stop a man from being beaten.

Pee Zed was staying at the Hampton by Hilton hotel in Birmingham city centre when she was berated and racially abused by a stranger in the hotel lobby.

When standing outside the hotel smoking a cigarette, Pee Zed saw a shirtless middle-aged man physically beating a seemingly defenceless man who had his right arm bandaged.

Pee Zed had started to record the fight in front of her while the man’s friend was trying to stop him from beating the man with the bandaged arm.

The aggressive man then harassed Pee Zed for around 20 minutes after this incident as he continued to follow her in and out of lifts, which she was forced to leave as she did not feel safe sharing the space with the aggressive man.

Pee Zed was able to capture footage of the racial abuse the man was saying to her, such as "Go back to Africa where you’re from," and, "You couldn’t do this in Zimbabwe".

Pee Zed went to report the man to the reception, but they did nothing in response to his aggressive behaviour towards her and the man outside he was previously beating and told her that there was no point doing anything as he was checking out from the hotel in the morning anyway.

When Pee Zed got back to her hotel room after the man eventually left, she phoned the police to report the incident and was told they would send a police officer over in the morning to talk to her, but they never did.

The police called her a few days later when she had returned to Leicester, but she was told they would be pursuing the incident no further and was uninterested when she offered for them to view the footage she had taken.

“The incident occurred during the early hours of July 10, 2023 just outside and inside the lobby of Hampton by Hilton hotel in Birmingham city centre,” she said.

“I went out to have a cigarette and I saw this shirtless man beating up a defenceless man who had his right arm bandaged.

“By the time I started recording, his friend was trying to stop him. He was harassing me for about 20 minutes as he kept following me in and out of the lifts because I didn't want to share a lift with him.

“His friend managed to hold him back whilst I took a lift and went to report him to the reception who said he was leaving in the morning so my complaint didn't matter.

“As I was leaving the reception he followed me and carried on racially abusing me. I didn't record that part as I was trying to de-escalate the situation and get away from him.”

Although Pee Zed made the local police and the reception staff aware of the man’s aggressive behaviour, no one escalated the situation any further or offered any help.

“When I was back in our room I called the police and they said they'd send an officer later that morning but they never did,” she said.

“They did call me a few days later when I was back in Leicester just to check on me but made me aware that they were not pursuing it further.

“I told them about my footage but they didn't seem interested.

“The hotel staff didn't do anything to stop him.

“They told me that it didn't matter as he was checking out later that morning.”

Pee Zed has been in England for 25 years and has unfortunately encountered racist abuse before, which she feels is never taken seriously enough.

“This incident made me feel very angry and humiliated. I stayed in the hotel for another day after this,” she said.

“I don't feel as though racism is taken very seriously in the UK as I'm currently dealing with previous physical attacks in Leicester which are still under police investigation.

“I have lived in England for 25 years and this man threatened to get me deported.

“I know a lot of good white people so this incident will never make me stereotype British Caucasians but I'm certainly disgusted, angered and disappointed by some people's attitudes including the police and hotel's response.”

Hilton was approached but had not provided a comment by the time of publication.
