A bungee rocket ride snapped, leaving terrified riders dangling in mid-air in northern China.

Video filmed in the city of Dalian in Liaoning Province on August 4 shows a rocket-like ride being catapulted into the air when, without warning, the right steel cable breaks, causing the pod to be flung to the left.

Onlookers below screamed and fled as the rocket ball's occupants swung wildly in the air, dangling several metres from the ground.

According to park staff, the riders sustained no injuries but were understandably traumatised. The amusement ride was immediately shut down, and an investigation into the cause of the rope's failure is underway.

In an official announcement on August 5, a malfunction in the right hanging axle triggered the ride's safety wire rope and safety belt protective function, causing the equipment to halt and the passengers to hang sideways.

Fortunately, the ride malfunction resulted in no injuries or property damage. The regulatory authority arrived at the scene promptly to inspect the situation. The equipment was within its inspection period, and the incident was attributed to equipment failure.

The operator has been ordered to cease operations and conduct a thorough on-site inspection by professional personnel from the equipment manufacturer.

The video was provided by local media with permission.
