Buildings torched and shops looted in small Western Cape farming town

Swellendam, 16 August 2023: The offices of the Mayor of Swellendam was torched and shops were looted during serving delivery protests in the Western Cape farming town of Swellendam. According to community leaders the protests come after their cries for affordable electricity fell on deaf ears.

ESKOM, South Africa’s state-owned power utility, is facing a deepening crisis as it tries to alleviate rolling blackouts across the country. According to police, 27 people were arrested for public violence, malicious damage to property and arson. The N2 highway which runs through the town was closed for several hours due to unrest and then later reopened to traffic.
