The Bloekombos informal settlement outside the Cape Town suburb of Kraaifontein was relatively calm today after three days of violent protests which saw roads barricaded and vehicles being torched.

Malusi Booi the City of Cape Town's mayoral committee member for human settlements visited the area and said the City had warned that such a situation would arise after illegal land occupations spiked during the country's level 5 coronavirus lockdown. Under South Africa's coronavirus disaster regulations courts were prohibited from issuing eviction orders.

Residents said they would continue fighting for their demands for the City to provide services to the shack dwellers. Police continue to monitor the area.
