Taxi violence brings Hout Bay to a standstill
Early morning protests brought the seaside town of Hout Bay in Cape Town to a standstill as taxi drivers blockaded the main road in front of the police station. Taxi drivers claim the City of Cape Town of impounding their vehicles in favour of the MyCiti bus service, which is a public-private partnership between the City and bus operators.
An estimated 100 taxi drivers started protesting and blocking roads at around 6am. They were eventually dispersed by police and law enforcement authorities using stun grenades and rubber bullets. They have vowed to continue protesting until the City authorities meet and negotiate with them.
Various townships have been rocked by violent protests related to the taxi industry. The taxi industry accuses the city of victimising them and impounding their vehicles, while the City accuses the taxi operators of breaking the law and refusing to apply for operating permits. On Friday a bus, police and private vehicles were allegedly torched by disgruntled taxi operators, with further violent incidents occurring over the weekend.
After the crowds were dispersed the roads remained closed due to burning debris in the streets, with a police armoured vehicle monitoring the situation as a small group of people still loitered around the area.
