A group of Indian and Russian nationals were arrested for allegedly overstaying in the country and assaulting cops.

Immigration police converged on the luxury villa in Phuket on October 26 to detain Indian man Nikhil Arora on charges of reportedly attacking an immigration officer.

But while carrying out the arrest, a group of men believed to be bodyguards emerged from the villa and blocked the entrance. The suspected gangsters brought out baseball bats and allegedly attacked the worried police officers, who were forced to retreat and call for backup.

Two law enforcers were injured before a 30-man special operations unit from the from the Phuket Provincial Police and Provincial Police Region 8 arrived to continue the raid.

Following a four-hour standoff, the group of Russian and Indian nationals were arrested.

Police said a Russian man named Shkodo Georgi, 33, and two Indian men identified as Kartik, 29, and Saxena Yuvraj, 25, were charged with overstaying in Thailand.

Authorities also found 20 vehicles with mismatched license plates and registration documents. Investigations found that the owner reportedly won auctions for 'lucky number license plates' but failed to inform the Thai Department of Land Transport.

Illegal exotic animals including white lions, macaws, raccoons, and a meerkat were also discovered in the property. The wildlife were rescued as they were being kept without authorisation.

The villa security guard and a caretaker said the estate was being rented by an Indian man who had married a Ukrainian woman.

Cops said five 'uncooperative and disruptive' foreigners were detained at the Cherng Talay station for questioning.
