Men in central India's Madhya Pradesh engaged in a 'Hingot war' on Monday 13 November, throwing explosive fireballs at each other in a local tradition carried out on dhok padwa, a day after Diwali.

The 'war' is tradition of Gautampura in which locals hold a fireball battle that marks the Mughal–Maratha Wars of the late 17th and early 18th centuries.

The warring parties throw 'hingots' at each other. These are firecrackers made from hollow fruit stuffed with gunpowder that are then left to dry for 8-10 days before being tied to sticks, set on fire and thrown at opponents.

Perhaps unsurprisingly it is a dangerous game and this year more than 30 people were injured in the war.

The crowd of spectators was better protected though, as the police had installed a 3m (10 feet)-high net to shield them from stray fireballs.

Reports said around 350 people were deployed in the area to prevent untoward incidents and maintain crowd safety.
