Monkey King impersonators spark outrage for alleged extortion of fees from photo-taking pedestrians in China
Monkey King impersonators sparked outrage for the alleged extortion of fees from photo-taking pedestrians in southern China.
The video was filmed in Foshan in Guangdong Province on January 15.
Two men dressed as the character Monkey King were spotted at the entrance of a library, luring people for photos. After posing with an overseas man, it appears that he was taken 60 yuan (£6.66) and left with only a few yuan in change. As the man prepared to leave, a scavenging elderly person forcefully demanded money but was refused.
On January 15, the Foshan Chancheng District Zhumiao Street Comprehensive Administrative Law Enforcement Office issued a "Statement of the Situation" on the official website of the Zhumiao Street Office.
In response to similar incidents, the office has repeatedly guided and reminded the public. This includes deploying staff to intensify patrols in crowded areas, collaborating with media platforms for proactive exposure, and using loudspeakers for continuous reminders in the vicinity. In the future, efforts will be increased to strengthen patrols and joint law enforcement to reduce the occurrence of such incidents.
The video was provided by local media with permission.
