A brave motorist helped police chase down a drunk hit-and-run driver in Thailand.

The hero motorcycle rider gave chase after a black Hyundai Elantra sedan reportedly drove counterflow and collided with other vehicles along a road in Khon Kaen province on January 4.

Despite calls to stop, the sedan driver Boonserm, 53, sped away and nearly hit more cars while fleeing.

Traffic police responded by blocking his escape route with a police vehicle.

Footage shows the furious motorcycle rider bashing the sedan's window with his helmet.

As cops surrounded the damaged car with a torn bumper, Boonserm was seen raising his hands in surrender.

Officers said the babbling Boonserm made no sense while he was being questioned. He was reported to have a blood alcohol level of 189mg per cent.

Police have filed charges against Boonserm, who was denied bail.

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.

However, a lack of road safety education in schools along with notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws, and chronic under-investment in infrastructure, all appear to hamper the efforts.
