A bungling motorcycle rider smashed into a barrier while he was distracted from his phone.

The man was making a food delivery as he fiddled with the gadget but struck the lowered barrier in a village in Nonthaburi, Thailand, on September 4.

Banthom Chantapas, 72, the security guard on duty at the entrance, approached to apprehend the flustered man, but he sped off to escape.

The crash had left the barrier dented, but still functional.

Banthom said: 'I think he might have been shocked so he drove away before I could talk to him. I urge him to take responsibility and pay for the damage he caused. It's not that serious, and it's better than being hunted down by police.'

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.

However, a lack of road safety education in schools along with notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws, and chronic under-investment in infrastructure, all appear to hamper the efforts.
