Chinese doctor successfully extracts pregnant cockroach from man's ear
A doctor successfully extracted a pregnant cockroach from a man's ear in southern China.
The video was filmed in Shenzhen City in Guangdong Province on January 25.
Mr. Liu woke up to a piercing pain in his ear, only to discover that a cockroach had burrowed its way into his ear canal. Despite his attempts to extract it himself, the creature remained lodged within, forcing him to rush to the hospital for professional help.
At Shenzhen People's Hospital, the Deputy Director of Otorhinolaryngology, Dr. Lyu Yanlu, revealed a shocking discovery. The patient's external auditory canal was almost entirely filled by a cockroach's body, measuring an alarming 2.5 centimetres in length.
The medical staff observed that the intruder was a female cockroach, and due to its live state, there was a risk of its sharp legs causing further damage to Liu's ear canal. Consequently, the decision was made to anaesthetise the cockroach to safely extract it.
Lyu noted an unusual aspect of this cockroach; it carried a prominent, swollen, yellow egg case, indicating it was pregnant. The doctor speculated that the cockroach might have been seeking a safe haven for its babies.
After anaesthetising the insect, the medical team meticulously removed the egg case and then the cockroach itself under endoscopic guidance. The removal was crucial as any eggs left behind could hatch within the ear canal.
The video was provided by local media with permission.
