Wildlife officials in villages near Koler, Tamil Nadu, buried thousands of eggs in breeding areas protected from predators.

As the olive ridley sea turtles hatched, the officials safely released them into the Bay of Bengal.

The olive ridley turtle, a rare species of turtle, regularly visits the coastal areas near Sirkazhi for breeding. Turtles come and go like that
Thirumullaivasal to Koogyar coastal areas are more preferred for spawning.
From December to March, the turtles visit this coastal area, dig holes and lay 100 to 150 eggs.


In order to keep the eggs safe from dogs and humans, the forest department has created egg trapping sites at six places including Koogayaar, Kottayamedu, Vanagiri, Manikappangu. The eggs collected by the forest department are kept safe in these hatcheries and after hatching they are safely released into the sea.

30,000 turtle eggs have been collected and kept safe by the forest department. This year they have collected 10,000 eggs more than last year.


In the first phase, the forest department released a thousand turtle hatchlings trapped in Kottayamedu, Koogayar and other areas into the sea. In the next steps, the forest department will release the hatchlings into the sea.
