The rare olive redly turtles which live around 250 years or above is called as the keeper pf the marine resources of samanthampettai of Nagai sea. The breeding of these rare turtles usually, takes place during the month of November and lasts till march. Due to the changes in the climatic condition, the turtles which visit the coastal area from Kodiyakarai to Kollidam of Nagai district, lays the eggs in the sand pits of the 182 km long stretch seashore and then migrate from the place. The district forest officers who collect the eggs, establish a breeding centre in Seerkalli, Nagai and kodiyakarai regions and incubate the eggs for hatchlings for about 45 to 60 days and then leave the young hatchlings into the sea.470 olive redly turtles hatched from the eggs collected from the coastal areas of Samanthampettai, Nagai and Nagore. Today, forest officials left the newly hatched turtles into the sea. The new born babies swam into the sea with the enthusiasm of returning to their home. The Mother turtles waiting in the opposite shore to take the young turtles back to the deep sea.
Forest officer Nagasathish Kiddijala said that, this year 1802 turtle eggs were collected in Nagai district and all were secluded in the ocean, but after the GAJA cyclonic storm and due to the natural changes of conditions in the sea, nearly 70% of the turtle breeding has been reduced this year.
The Fisherman have said that the olive redly turtle chicks which plays a major role in fish breeding and cleansing the sea, have laid around 5226 eggs, but due to the sudden cyclonic GAJA storm and the unusual events of this year, the fate of the turtles has been greatly reduced, said the fishermen in grief.
Hence, in order to protect the rare species of olive redly turtles, the fishermen and the people who are living around the coastal areas of Nagai district are requested not to throw away the polythene bags and other waste materials into the sea. If we do so, we can protect and safeguard the olive redly turtles which live around two decades.
