STORYLINE:
The Hauts-de-France region, located in north France, is a long-standing industrial area and home to French leading automotive industry.
Today, the region is embracing electrification and building a 100-kilometer-long "battery valley," where four mega factories have been established in recent years.
With an advantage in the electric vehicle sector, some Chinese companies have cooperated with French enterprises.
SOUNDBITE 1 (French): YANN PITOLLET, CEO of Nord France Invest
"As early as 2018, we realized that the future of the automotive industry lay partly in electric vehicles. Obviously, we export a lot, but we also have a lot of companies coming to set up here. Among the companies actually installed, Chinese companies have a significant presence in various projects."
In 2023, Minth Group, one of the leading auto part producers from China, and Renault Group created a joint venture in the city of Ruitz to produce battery casings for electric vehicles assembled in France.
SOUNDBITE 2 (French): JEAN-LUC BOIS, Ruitz plant manager of Renault
"One of the benefits of working with a Chinese partner to set up the joint venture is that we get the expertise in the product and the process, rather than starting from scratch. Two people are better (and) stronger than one person starting from scratch."
SOUNDBITE 3 (French): YANN PITOLLET, CEO of Nord France Invest
"Today, Chinese companies have developed a real advance in battery and electric vehicle technology, so what we're really interested in is creating a partnership. In this way, we can benefit from the know-how of these Chinese companies, who have made very rapid progress in electric vehicles and upstream technologies."
Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Paris.
